Winners never quit! This is absolute truth in anything, but it is especially true when it comes to your finances. When you decide to pay off debt it becomes a journey. A long journey depending on how much debt you have. If you have tens of thousands of dollars in debt you can’t expect to be out of that amount in three months. It is going to take a couple of years or more.

There are going to be ups and downs. There are going to be highs and lows. Because of all these emotions that are guaranteed to be involved you have to be strong. You have to be persistent. You have to stay the course.

There will be times when it feels like life is coming at you from all angles. Like the world is closing in on you. You will be making great progress on paying off the debt and even saving money when all of a sudden a financial emergency hits you. It knocks you on your back and you feel like “what is the point?” I had a few of those emergencies come up when I was in debt. A couple of this emergencies felt unbearable.

But…….

I knew I had to keep going. I had to stay the course because there was no other option.

After the first couple of setbacks when I felt like quitting I knew that I needed to rethink my journey.

Give myself a break:

I had to come to the realization that this journey was not going to be perfect. My spending plan would not be perfect every month. My savings goal would not be reached each month. Life was not going to be the same each month. Once I came to accept that this was the case the journey started to flow a little easier. I started to give myself some grace while at the same time staying aggressive on my journey to becoming debt free.

Reward yourself:

This is important to remind you every now and then that you are making progress. That you are making a dent in your debt. I would set goals for myself and when I would reach that goal I would reward myself. A goal such as making $300 by doing a yard sale and then using the $300 towards the debt. The rewards were not expensive and when you reward yourself it should not break the bank. I would reward myself with free events or a low cost ($5-$10) treat and most of the time that money came out of some extra money that I had made. Rewards are all about motivation and motivation keeps you moving forward!

If the journey was easy then everyone would be debt free. Everyone would be millionaires. The course is not for the weak. It is for the strong, which you are. Keep going and stay the course. It is totally worth it!
