Every year, countless people create New Year’s resolutions. Some are achieved, but many fall by the wayside. One reason resolutions often fail is the lengthy time frame—an entire year—which can make goals feel overwhelming and easy to forget. What if there were a better way to approach your resolutions, one that sets you up for success?
Let me share a fresh perspective that has worked wonders for me.
There’s a book that introduced me to this concept: The 12-Week Year. The core idea is simple but powerful: instead of setting goals for an entire year, break them into 12-week intervals.
Why? Because a shorter time frame creates urgency, focus, and a greater sense of accountability. I gave this method a shot last year and was amazed at how much more I accomplished compared to when I set traditional annual goals.
Let’s apply this approach to one of the most common resolutions and one of my favs—money.
Instead of declaring, “I’m going to save $2,000 this year,” only to hit June with no progress and a forgotten goal, try breaking it into a 12-week plan with actionable steps:
Breaking down a big goal into smaller, achievable steps makes it easier to stay on track and celebrate progress along the way.
Adapting to this new system took time. Like many people, I was used to setting annual goals and hoping for the best. The shift to a 12-week model required me to rethink how I plan, but it also forced me to act daily and weekly to make progress.
The result? Greater accountability and more consistent execution.
If you’ve struggled with achieving your New Year’s resolutions in the past, maybe it’s time to try something different. Shorten your timeline, focus your energy, and see how much more you can accomplish.
Whether it’s saving money, improving your health, or pursuing a personal passion, breaking your goals into 12-week intervals could be the game-changer you need. Why not give it a shot this year?
Sometimes, all it takes is a small shift in perspective to achieve big results.
What do you think? Could this method work for you? Let’s talk about it in the comments!
